Singing for your supper...
16th September 2020

So you've got an interview! The employer has seen your C.V. and responded positively. Fantastic news and now comes the preparation.

Make sure you are very familiar with everything you've put on your C.V. We've got a few great stories where our candidate has stated that they were part of a barber shop quartet or another candidate a talented rapper in their spare time. Don't be surprised if you are asked to demonstrate your talents (where possible!). If you've put it on your C.V, you'll need to be prepared to back it up. Fortunately both the singing and the rapping went down impressively for both our candidates, and they were both offered jobs! But the lesson is be prepared to back your information up.

We regularly help and give advice to our candidates to prepare for interviews. Having an understanding of your potential future employer, their expectations and requirements and company culture is an essential part of recruiting the right people. The process of preparing for the interview is very important as those first impressions really do count.

Here are a few topliner pointers, we've put together:

  1. Find out everything you can about the company and what it makes or does. Look for current news – show you are up to date.
  2. Why does this job exist? What problems will it solve? What are the Key performance indicators in the role?
  3. Remember: employers buy experience. Think about what evidence of achievement you can talk about at the interview; rehearse your success stories.
  4. Work out what is appropriate in terms of everything you present, including yourself. Look the part, and you will feel it. Dress as if you are already doing the job.
  5. What is the most difficult question you might have to face? Practice the answer. Master the “what are your weaknesses?” question that often comes up.
  6. Write down some questions of your own.
  7. Smile and be positive.

Aside from that, enjoy the process. You are on the verge of a potential new job and if it doesn’t go your way, there are other roles out there for you.
