Job hunting in a pandemic?
3rd June 2020

We are used to helping people look for new roles for various reasons but the current climate is challenging for so many businesses.

We asked our director Chris Jones, to address some of the questions we've been asked or seen being asked online, and with his years of experience, including having been through a recession, how would he advise people currently:

1. Should you stick with a company that’s not looking after you in the current climate.

“My advice would be in the short-term – yes - don’t make any rash decisions and see what options are out there when the market starts to pick up. There is no harm in starting your job search, networking with Recruiters or potential employers and having your CV ready for when new opportunities arise. It might take a while but if you have employment it puts you in such a strong position to bide your time, be selective and ramp things up when the time is right.”

2. Is it a bad time to be looking for a new job?

“Not necessarily!  Some companies in certain sectors are thriving so still hiring and successfully managing that process remotely.  Now is a great time to get your CV ready, prepare and plan your job search.  For a lot of businesses they may not know exactly what staff they require until the crisis starts to ease, so to manage expectations we would not expect to see a big rise in vacancies being advertised until towards the end of the Summer at the earliest.”

3. If job security is an issue, should you stick with the company that is not looking after you until the health crisis is over?

“There is no harm in looking at what is out there! If you are at threat of redundancy and/or have concerns about the financial stability of the business you work for, it would be remiss of you to not get your CV together and start applying for roles that are available.  Look after yourself if your company is not looking after you! Job boards and recruitment agency websites will provide a good barometer of the current market but expect it to take a little longer to secure a new role than before lockdown.”

4. What other options are there?

“There is a very strong likelihood that the temporary and interim market will see more demand due to businesses being reluctant to recruit permanently or headcount freezes. If you do find yourself out of work, please don’t count out this option as it can provide stability in the short to medium term, will allow you to earn whilst you seek a permanent role and, should you prove yourself invaluable, will often lead to you being taken onto a longer term arrangement.  There’s lots to factor in and consider around every personal circumstance, but more often than not the mantra of “nothing ventured, nothing gained” is true,  so don’t be afraid to start looking now or in the near future.”

If you have anything you'd like to discuss, whether it's regarding your business or your job search, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us. We'd be happy to give advice or talk through planning options for the future.
