When is the right time to look for a new job?
4th March 2015

Changing jobs is, they say, one of the most stressful things you will experience.  So should you stay or should you go?  Ask yourself these questions:

‘Am I getting job satisfaction?’ – Do you feel you are in your comfort zone and not really being challenged? This can often lead to you feeling de-motivated as you will feel you are not progressing.  In an ever changing world it is important that you are constantly developing and learning new skills.  Is your employer giving you those opportunities? If not, have you asked your employer as they may well be prepared to provide you with the development that you require.  However, if your employer is not prepared to invest in your development then now may be the right time to start looking.

‘Am I happy in my job?’ – Job satisfaction is key to your career success, it is important that you consider both the job and the company that you work for.  You may feel happy with your work colleagues and company culture but find that the job you are doing is not challenging you enough.  This is the perfect time to explore other opportunities within your current company before making the decision to leave.  If you love your job but are not happy with the culture of your current company now may be the right time to start that job search.

‘Do I feel valued?’ – If you feel that in your current role the work that you do is not recognised you will feel undervalued and your career development may suffer.  Again it is important to go back to your current employer and raise this issue as if you are valued your employer will be able to put actions into place. If however things don’t change now might be the time to start your career search.

‘Is my career going somewhere?’ - Have you made it clear to your current employer your career ambitions?  It is important that you identify if there are any opportunities with your current employer before dipping your toe in the job market.  At this stage it is always worth giving your current employer the opportunity to come back to you with potential opportunities rather than going to them with a letter of resignation.  Too many people leave their current role without exploring all opportunities within the organisation and when faced with a counter offer feel it is too late to stay as they feel undervalued.

Finally, make sure you take a measured approach to your decision to start looking for a new role.  Write down the pros and cons of your current role and what you will be looking for in a new job.  When embarking on a job search it is important that you are committed, so that when offered that new job, you can leave your old employer knowing you have made the right decision.
